Typographic Sculpture

This project was done for one of my first year course in RMIT University.
The project brief was to create a large-scale typographic sculpture to be installed in the city of Melbourne. The surface of the sculpture is to be decorated with a pattern reflecting cultural aspects of the municipality that are inclusive, avoid cultural appropriation's and cliches. The client is looking for ideas that go beyond coffee, football and the Grand Prix. The designs were prepared as 3-dimensional mockups and placed into the environment using Augmented Reality (AR) technology.
Two pattern illustration concepts have been chosen as the outcome, both complete with a postcard set collateral.
Close-up photos and an augmented reality video are also included in this presentation to display the details of the sculpture from different points of view.

Sketches in the Ideation process
Primary OutcomeThe primary concept has a theme of connection to places, an illustration of getting around the city by the different modes of transport in Melbourne. The outcome is a 3-dimensional model of a six-pattern combination delivered in a mural artwork style inspired by Melbourne's famous street art scene. The use of different patterns and leveling in the sculpture is aimed to avoid monotonous outcomes and add in a level of depth, illustrating the complexity of the art scene. The unity of those different elements also represents the diversity that stands together as Melbourne.

Secondary Outcome
A secondary concept to approach the brief by illustrating Melbourne’s landmarks and exceptional art deco architectural style. The letters are wrapped with line-art illustrations of famous bridges and buildings in Melbourne, then finished off with immaculate 3D panels and lavish gold decorations. The details in the line illustration style, geometric shapes, colour palette, and embellishments exhibit the distinctive features of art deco buildings.
